The medieval Castle of Gyula, as suggests its name, hosts every summer since 1964, the Summer Castle Theatre in his courtyard. Since the opening season of performances, from June 27 until August 10, The Castle Theatre in Gyula awaits and dashes its audience with outstanding performances and concerts. Every night historical shows full of drama are presented on stages: opera and operetta, various recitals of ballet and dance ensembles from Hungary and abroad. Also puppetry, classical music, medieval music, festivals of Jazz and Blues, folklore music and folk dances, all designed and organized in order to delight the guests and visitors of Gyula. On the stage assembled on the lake next to The Medieval Castle and at various scenes build up at different points in the town, we organize various performances, creating a true cultural festival in the our small town, in the great plains in the southeast part of Hungary, considered and called its genuine pearl.
Gyula Castle Theater, in already rooted tradition, continues to organize and bring the best performances of the best players in order to delight audience of all ages and all tastes.

Concert hall

Since 1996 in the Kossuth Street No.13 the Gyula Castle Theater has opened the doors of its concert hall, where in the fall-spring season, small theater performances, concerts, parties and dance parties are organized.

 

In 1999 the antechamber of the Concert Hall was also inaugurated in a form of a small art gallery, where different works of art, paintings and photographs of different Hungarian and international artists can be presented.

Summer Season

Every evening, from early July to mid-August, The Gyula Castle Theatre offers in its summer season, historical shows full of drama: opera and operetta, various recitals of ballet and dance ensembles from Hungary and abroad. Also puppetry, classical music, medieval music, festivals of Jazz and Blues, folklore music and folk dances, all designed and organized in order to delight the guests and visitors of Gyula.

In recent years besides actors and famous local artists, increasingly more often well known international artists honored us with their presence on stages of The Gyula Castle Theater.

Multitude at the Körös Valley and Borderland all Arts Assembly

The meeting takes place here every year, the folklore culture being so typical in the great Plains of Hungary and in the Carpathian Basin. Well-known and appreciated craftsmen are gathering from Hungarian counties such as: Szolnok, Bács-Kiskun, Békés and Hajdú-Bihar – and also from abroad from Vojvodina, Banat and Bácska - Serbia and also from Romania the counties Arad and Bihar are always present. Each year they keep coming to present their colorful folklore, dances, clothes and handicrafts, culture and tradition being passed on from generation to generation with such devotion and love that should be sustained and honored the right way. We are proud and happy to host such a gathering which reflects the respect and love for our past, roots and traditions.

Shakespeare Festival

Since 2005, becoming in the meantime a tradition by entering the international theater programs, the Shakespeare Festival is organized at the beginning of July, at the Gyula Castle Theater. During the 10 days on the stages and in the courtyard of The Gyula Castle Theater played related to the great English writer are presented. The festival's reputation is demonstrated by the interest of world’s most renowned directors who want to present their unique performances on this stage, decor and atmosphere being totally special. Creating this international festival of prestigious performances of Shakespeare supported by prominent guests from Hungary and abroad, offers a different approach to the works of the playwright William Shakespeare, a festival that had an important role not only in the development of theater but also music, dance, film, cuisine, street-play, art, drama and film conferences.

Gyula Castle Jazz Festival

In 1992 in The Gyula Castle Theatre was organized the first jazz festival in Gyula, which since then has been held every year, always in a Saturday in mid-July. Over the past 24 years, more than a hundred concerts were held in the courtyard of the Renaissance with excellent acoustics of the Castle of Gyula supported by the most renowned interpreters generally from Hungary and every year having a guest of honor of an international stature.

Gyula Castle Blues Festival

Since 2006, on the second day of Gyula Jazz Festival, is held The Blues music section. Jeanne Carroll was the first American singer who made her debut on the stage of the Festival of Blues in The Gyula Castle, which was followed over the years by many other outstanding artists such as: Lord Bishop, Ron Ringwood, Big Daddy Wilson, Hubert Tubbs and Eric "Guitar" Davis. Besides these international artists, also local and well-known and appreciated Hungarian Blues musicians concerted and performed on this stage. The local public is much attached to this style of music since the first edition which took place exactly 10 years ago, demonstrating its devotion and love by creating a club of Blues for the fans and lovers of Blues who maintain tradition and are actively involved in bringing new artists on stage of the festival.
